  28. I recall that until a few years ago virtually every modem had the default 
  29. &C and &D settings for leased line operation. It was absurd to have to 
  30. set that in every modem I bought up to v.32bis. I also am appalled at the 
  31. number of comm and BBS software authors who provide redundant 
  32. initialization/setup strings. An example is PCBoard, an otherwise 
  33. excellent package written by knowledgable people, whose setup string for 
  34. the USR Courier V.everything is 3 lines long and could easily be reduced to:

  38. Because all the other settings in their recommended string are already 
  39. there. I suppose they think it's more impressive to have the huge setup 
  40. string.

  47. Most modems can be setup easily for day to day communications with 
  48. factory defaults. There are a few tricks to get around poor 
  49. implementations of V.42 and poor lines but they shouldn't be needed most 
  50. of the time. Personally, I don't call places that have modems that have 
  51. to be worked around. If they cannot put a decent modem online or 
  52. configure their modems properly, I figure they don't have anything else 
  53. worth bothering with.
