- I recall that until a few years ago virtually every modem had the default
- &C and &D settings for leased line operation. It was absurd to have to
- set that in every modem I bought up to v.32bis. I also am appalled at the
- number of comm and BBS software authors who provide redundant
- initialization/setup strings. An example is PCBoard, an otherwise
- excellent package written by knowledgable people, whose setup string for
- the USR Courier V.everything is 3 lines long and could easily be reduced to:

- Because all the other settings in their recommended string are already
- there. I suppose they think it's more impressive to have the huge setup
- string.

- Most modems can be setup easily for day to day communications with
- factory defaults. There are a few tricks to get around poor
- implementations of V.42 and poor lines but they shouldn't be needed most
- of the time. Personally, I don't call places that have modems that have
- to be worked around. If they cannot put a decent modem online or
- configure their modems properly, I figure they don't have anything else
- worth bothering with.
